What this rate is, and what it is not
- It is the value of the gold content in one gram, from the live international price, converted at AED 3.6725 per US dollar.
- It is not a shop's selling price. Each shop in the Gold Souk sets its daily rate close to this figure.
- On top of it come the making charge for the piece and 5% UAE VAT.
From the rate to the price of a piece
- Gold value: the weight in grams × the day's rate for the karat.
- Making charge: the cost of the design and workmanship, per gram or for the piece.
- VAT: 5% UAE VAT. Visitors can claim it back through the tourist refund scheme.
Our guide to gold price, making charge and VAT shows a worked example. If you are selling gold, the price comes from the weight, the purity shown by the assay and the day's rate: see sell gold.
Our rate today
At our four Gold Souk showrooms, every piece is weighed in front of you, and the weight, the day's rate, the making charge and VAT are written out separately. Abroad? Ask on WhatsApp and we send today's rate, with photos and weights.
