Indian customs: the jewellery allowance

India's Baggage Rules, 2026, notified on 2 February 2026, set the duty-free jewellery allowance by weight only. The earlier value caps were removed.

PassengerDuty-free jewellery

Other passengersUp to 20 grams
  • Who it applies to: returning residents and tourists of Indian origin who have stayed abroad for more than one year.
  • Above the allowance: declare it to Indian customs on arrival and pay the duty.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How much gold jewellery can I carry from Dubai to India duty-free?

Under India's Baggage Rules, 2026, returning residents and tourists of Indian origin who have stayed abroad for more than one year may bring jewellery duty-free by weight: up to 40 grams for a female passenger and up to 20 grams for other passengers. There is no longer a value cap. Anything above the allowance must be declared to Indian customs. Rules can change, so check the official Indian customs (CBIC) notice before you travel.

Can you make 24K jewellery from my own gold bar or coins?

Yes. Bring your 24K bars, coins or biscuits to our Gold Souk showroom and our workshop makes them into chains, kadas, bangles, rings or bracelets. The making charge is agreed before work starts, and the finished pieces are weighed and handed over with their weights.

How fast can you make a 24K chain or kada before my flight?

The workshop makes 24K pieces the same day. Tell us your flight time when you order, and we confirm the ready time, the weight and the price before we start.

Which 24K pieces can you make?

Chains, kadas, bangles, rings and bracelets in 24K gold, for men and women. Send a photo of the design you want on WhatsApp, or choose one in the showroom.

How is the price worked out?

If you buy our gold: the weight in grams multiplied by the day's 24K rate, plus the making charge, plus 5% UAE VAT, each written out separately. If you bring your own gold, you pay the making charge, agreed before we start.

Do you advise on Indian customs?

No. We make the jewellery and give you the invoice. The customs allowance depends on your own situation, such as how long you have lived abroad. Check the rules with Indian customs (CBIC) before you travel and declare anything above your allowance.
